...on the early plastic pikies CCBCO attached the lip with a screw thru a hole in the head, just like with the wood baits. CCBCO considered these to be equals of the wood baits and at the beginning did not even mark the boxes as "W" wood or "P" plastic, that came later. The early plastic baits were of much higher quality than the later ones, and could have lips attached after the body was painted.
That option was lost once the cost cutting measure of molding the lips in became the norm, hence the overspray. Hope this helps some.
