I've had this trap in my hands and have talked to it's current owner about it. Not trying to ruffle any feathers here but this trap is almost certainly a contemporary "copy."
The original Smith Patent "Evan's Eagle Claw" traps were advertised to have came in three sizes. The No.1 and No.2 sizes are the ones that we have all seen before. The No.3 was claimed to weigh over 10 pounds and be able to catch a bear.
The trap in this picture weighs about half that and is made unlike any of the other known eagle claws. It also looks to be much younger then the mid 1800's which is where the other ones date from.
Most collectors would say that the No.3 size was most likely never produced however if someone found it that would be a killer find........ this trap in my opinion however is not it.
I could be wrong... I don't claim to be an expert...
